FIRE PROTECTING VOIDS AND OPENINGS - Approved Document B

Approved Document B requires fire compartmentation be maintained where service pipes and ducts penetrate fire walls. Astroflame products restore fire resistance as required by Approved Document B in a simple, effective and reliable manner.

What Approved Document B states:

Openings in other Compartment Walls or Compartment Floors should be limited to those for the passage of pipes, ventilation ducts, chimneys, appliance ventilation ducts or ducts encasing one or more flue pipes, which meet the provisions in Section 10 ... Every joint or imperfection of fit, or opening to allow services to pass through the element, should be adequately protected by sealing or fire-stopping so that the fire resistance of the element is not impaired.

Openings for pipes and ducts passing through a fire-separating element must be protected using a proprietary sealing system which has been shown by test to maintain the fire resistance of the wall, floor or cavity barrier.

Where ventilation ducts, flues etc. pass through fire separating elements the integrity of those
elements should be maintained using fire dampers or fire-resisting enclosures or fire-resisting
ductwork.

FIRE CERTIFICATION:

Testing standards that apply to fire protection products for pipework, ductwork and voids are:

Penetration sealing systems BS476: Part 20 and 22
Fire resistant ductwork BS476: Part 20 and 24
Fire dampers BS EN 1366-2
